Looking after spiders

Hello to ALL spider keeping enthusiastic people.

Have you ever thought "I would like to keep a spider" well here is the help.

If you plan to keep a spider or tarantula and you need to know the basics then you’re in the right place.

To start off the VERY first thing is to know about the spider, for example, is it exotic? If so before buying the spider you would need heat mats for the bottom of the vivarium and a heat lamp, once the heat matt is in place you can add the sphagnum moss and vermiculate.  If its habitat is burrowing then you would need to provide housing that's covered all but the entrance with the vermiculate, with the moss you place it at the other end of the vivarium and this is where the prey goes.  When adding the sphagnum moss and vermiculate make sure you leave a space for a water dish this must NOT be to deep, just enough for a drink but not a swim.  Once you have the vivarium completely set up then you can set about buying the spider, the best thing would be to get a "teenage" spider this is because most spiderlings (baby spiders) don’t make it into adulthood (without expert care).  Once you have bought the spider the retailer should provide you with the correct meals but in case they don't you will be looking at getting food smaller than the spider the best food for them is crickets (micro crickets for spiderlings) or meal worms, only get meal worms if it builds a web off the ground.  When feeding you just place the cricket by the feeding spot and the cricket does the rest by sending vibrations to the spider saying "DINNER".  Feeding should take place about every third day and always feed them same place and if possible at the same time.  Most spiders can go a week without food.  You should make sure the last meal has been eaten this keeps a healthy clean vivarium and makes cleaning out easier.  If you follow the steps you should have many years of fun with your new spider.

Make sure you give the spider fresh water everyday.

Cleaning the vivarium: Once every month you should clean the vivarium out, this keeps any parasites from killing the spider and as long as the vivarium is clean, your spider will be very happy.
