The stigma spiders have: People have grown up thinking the worst of spiders and a lot of people I have spoken to have said to me their view on spiders are “things that bite humans and run or scurry away fast”. This is true but is a ‘stigma’ view as people have; depending on the situation a number of actions can happen so we will take the situation as... you’re sitting at home, you go to grab your ice cold water off the table and a black widow is sitting there taking a little drink from the condensation drips on the table. As you move your hand, due to a spiders poor eye sight will see a large shadow moving towards him and he know its bigger than he is so he will more than likely run away, if he decided to be a kamikaze spider and you still have not seen this spider then as you move your hand closer it will rear up onto the back section of legs and open the front pair of legs to display its fangs. This is a warning, the rearing up says look at me I am BIG and the showing of the fangs is so if it needs to attack they can with a clean precise action. Back to the scenario: We will say that he still has not moved and as you go to pick up the glass your hand gets very close to the spider, it might now feel threatened and then attack administering the venom.
As with most spiders whether it be prey trapped in the web or the spider wandering around if they think its too big or they will end up worse off they will leave it or free it if it’s caught in the web. In some cases it might run away to the retreat to hide. If they think they are safe then prey trapped in its web will be bitten to inject venom and once again they will retreat till the insect is dead, they will then wrap it up. In the case of humans or other spiders they would rear up and spread the front pair of legs to make them look bigger and to also show its fangs. Due to the way venom is made they would inject as a last result as they need the food to make the venom.
Insects that contain a stinger e.g. wasp or hornet would either be left or they will be cut away as the stinger is more of a threat and will kill a spider.
Once bitten: Lets take it you have now you have been bitten you turn and see the spider run off and not sure what type it is then depending on if you live in an area that contains lots of venomous to human spider I would advise not sitting around get to a doctor or the ER/A&E. If you have something to catch the spider in without risking another bite then try and do so as this will result in faster anti-venom treatment if needed. With technology these days most mobile phones have a camera so you could always try and take a picture. I have uploaded sections about the spiders containing venom classed as affecting humans and with a general picture of what it looks like and if you can describe its looks that can also help.
